What types of circuit diagrams are there?
In electrical engineering and electrical design, there are three basic types of circuit diagrams. Depending on the project, industry, and requirements, different forms of representation are used—and they often complement one another. Each circuit diagram represents electrical functions using standardized symbols (circuit symbols): Components such as switches, relays, or fuses are depicted as distinct elements in the diagram, with connecting lines following the actual electrical circuit.
Circuit diagram
The electrical schematic shows the flow of current within an electrical circuit in a logical sequence. It is the most important document for commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Each component must be clearly labeled, and connection lines must follow the actual circuit. Applications: mechanical engineering, plant engineering, control panel construction, power plants, the automotive industry, aviation, maritime transport, and public transportation.
Overview diagram
(Schematic / Single-Line Diagram)
The overview schematic—also known as a schematic or single-line diagram—provides a simplified representation of the entire system. It shows the main components and how they interact, without going into detail about individual circuits. Applications: project planning, building permit procedures, operation of electrical systems, emergency and crisis management.
Control cabinet layout plan
The layout diagram shows the exact arrangement of all components in the control cabinet—location, size, spacing, and labeling. It serves as the basis for error-free installation and future expansions. Applications: Control cabinet builders, maintenance, and retrofitting.
SMART ENGINEERS creates all three types—individually or as a complete documentation package.

Get started nowFrequently Asked Questions About Circuit Diagrams

What standards and symbols apply to circuit diagrams?
The most important standards are EN 60617 (schematic symbols), DIN EN 61082 (documentation), EN 81346 (structuring principles and reference labeling—EN, IEC), IEC 61355 (labeling system), and VDE 0100 (safety of electrical installations).
What is the difference between a schematic overview and a circuit diagram?
The schematic overview shows a simplified representation of the entire system; the circuit diagram shows the detailed current flow.
How are components labeled on a circuit diagram?
Each component is assigned a unique identifier consisting of letters and numbers (reference code) so that it can be unambiguously identified on the drawing—the basis for maintenance, troubleshooting, and future expansions.
What experience does SMART ENGINEERS have in creating circuit diagrams?
With over 25 years of experience and more than 2,000 electrical schematics created, we support companies in the industrial, energy, healthcare, aviation, maritime, and public transportation sectors—from simple overview schematics to complex, multi-page electrical schematics for sophisticated systems.
Can you take existing schematics and revise them?
Yes—even if you currently only have paper drawings or unstructured PDFs. We’ll convert your existing documentation into standards-compliant digital documentation.
How long does it take to create a circuit diagram?
That depends on the complexity and scope of the project. We will coordinate the specific turnaround time with you on a case-by-case basis to ensure that your project deadlines are reliably met.
We don't have any existing documentation—can you still help us?
Yes. We survey your system, assess its current condition, and create complete circuit diagram documentation from scratch—in compliance with standards and in digital format using EPLAN Electric P8.
Can you help us update the plans on a regular basis?
Yes. Whether it involves modifications, expansions, or routine inspections—we handle the ongoing updating of your schematic documentation to ensure that your records always reflect the actual condition of your system.
